The Better Part
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. 3 The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ 4 But he answered, ‘It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”—Matthew 4:1-4 NRSV
Yesterday in our scripture we looked at how important of the Word of God was for Moses and the Hebrew people. After Jesus was baptized by John, the Baptizer, in the River Jordan, he was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He had fasted forty days and the first temptation was that of hunger. Jesus had the power to turn the stones into bread, but He knew that wasn’t the ‘better part.’ I can imagine during those forty days of prayer and fasting God warned Him the tempter would be working against His ministry for the very beginning. Jesus knew, as we should know, the Word of God is the food for our spirit.
Dear God, thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus, to earth to teach us…Amen.
